Samba Drumming Workshop

Our Samba drumming workshop introduces pupils to the vibrant rhythms and energy of Brazilian percussion through dynamic, hands-on music-making. Using authentic samba instruments, children explore rhythm, pulse and groove while learning how individual parts combine to create powerful ensemble music.

 

Designed to support the National Curriculum, the workshop develops timing, coordination, listening and teamwork. Pupils experience the excitement of performing together as a samba ensemble, gaining insight into Brazilian musical culture while building confidence, focus and a strong sense of shared achievement.

National Curriculum Links

Key Stage 1
Pupils:​

  • Explore pulse and rhythm through simple repeating patterns

  • Play untuned percussion with control and expression

  • Develop listening and turn-taking skills in group music-making

  • Experience music from another culture

Curriculum focus:

Use their voices and play tuned and untuned instruments musically, listen with concentration, and understand music from different traditions.

Key Stage 2

Pupils:

  • Perform in ensemble contexts, maintaining their own rhythmic role

  • Develop understanding of layered rhythms and structure

  • Respond to conductor cues and musical signals

  • Learn about Brazilian musical traditions and cultural context

Curriculum focus:
Play and perform in ensemble contexts, develop an understanding of musical structures and traditions, and appreciate a wide range of high-quality live music.

  • Perform increasingly complex rhythmic patterns with accuracy

  • Understand rhythm, texture and form within a world music tradition

  • Develop ensemble awareness, independence and leadership

  • Explore music as a cultural and social practice

Perform, compose and listen with increasing complexity, and understand musical traditions, genres and contexts.

Key Stage 4

Pupils:

  • Apply rhythmic and ensemble skills to GCSE performance and composition

  • Analyse rhythmic structure and texture in samba and world music

  • Strengthen timing, coordination and group performance skills

  • Broaden musical understanding through live practical music-making

Curriculum focus:
Develop technical and expressive performance skills, engage critically with music from diverse cultures, and support exam specifications.
